What Does a Notary Public Do?

A Notary Public is a qualified attorney with additional registration at the High Court of South Africa, authorised to:

  • Witness signatures and verify the identity of signatories
  • Administer oaths for affidavits and declarations
  • Certify documents as true copies of originals
  • Authenticate documents for international use
  • Draft legal documents such as powers of attorney

Notarisation adds a layer of legal authenticity that is recognised both locally and internationally. For documents intended for use abroad, notarisation is often the first step before High Court apostille or DIRCO authentication.

When is Notarisation Required?

For International UseDocuments being used overseas often require notarisation before they can be apostilled or authenticated:

  • Powers of attorney for foreign property or business transactions
  • Affidavits and declarations for immigration
  • Certified copies of passports and qualifications
  • Consent letters for children travelling abroad
  • Commercial contracts and agreements

For Local UseSome South African institutions and transactions require notarised documents:

  • Property transfers involving foreign elements
  • Company resolutions for certain registrations
  • Statutory declarations
  • HPCSA and professional body applications

Not sure if you need a notary? Contact us with your document and destination—we'll confirm the correct route.

How It Works

Step 1: Contact Us
Tell us what you need notarised and where the document will be used. We'll confirm requirements and provide a quote.

Step 2: Book an Appointment
For documents requiring your signature (powers of attorney, affidavits), you'll need to attend our Pretoria office in person with your ID.

Step 3: Attend & Sign
Bring your original documents and South African ID or passport. The Notary will verify your identity, witness your signature, and apply the notarial stamp and seal.

Step 4: Further Legalisation (If Required)
If your document needs to be used internationally, we proceed directly to High Court apostille and/or DIRCO authentication.

Walk-ins welcome for straightforward notarisations—but we recommend booking for complex matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to come in person?
For documents requiring your signature (powers of attorney, affidavits), yes—the Notary must witness you signing and verify your identity. For certified copies of documents you already have, you can courier the originals to us.

Can you notarise documents for someone overseas?
The person signing must be physically present before the Notary. If you're overseas, you'll need to use a notary in your location, or we can discuss alternative arrangements.

What's the difference between a Notary Public and a Commissioner of Oaths?
A Commissioner of Oaths can witness affidavits for local use. A Notary Public has additional authority—notarised documents are recognised internationally and can proceed to a High Court apostille. For international use, you need a Notary Public.

How long does notarisation take?
The notarisation itself takes 15-30 minutes. If you need High Court apostille afterwards, add 1-2 days.

Can you draft my power of attorney?
Yes. Tell us what authority you need to grant and to whom—we'll draft the document and notarise it when you attend.

Do you offer a mobile notary service?

For corporate clients with multiple signatories, we can arrange on-site attendance. Contact us to discuss.
